Online Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
The Psychology program is designed to provide the student with insights about the individual and his or her world. It is primarily concerned with the analysis of the relationships between scientific theory and basic research in discovering, understanding, and integrating the fundamental laws of behavior. Major theories, methodological approaches, and applications of psychological knowledge are stressed in the areas of sensation and perception, learning and cognitive processes, motivation and emotion, development, personality, social psychology, intelligence, counseling and psychotherapy, and abnormal psychology.
The Psychology major at Dominican College continues to offer students opportunities for broad experiential learning in preparation for a wide range of employment opportunities in the caring, social, and mental health fields. Courses are particularly geared to emphasize the social and psychological underpinnings of societal issues, as well as to guide a student’s understanding of the complex inter-relationships that result from individuals interacting with their environment in contemporary society.
The program requires 42 credits as well as 36 core general education requirements and 42 credits in liberal arts in order to achieve a robust liberal arts degree. In the Accelerated program, the expected duration is 3 1/3 years to completion. There are no prerequisites to enter the program although each course deepens the knowledge base and analysis of complex issues.
An undergraduate Psychology degree provides excellent preparation for continued graduate work in psychology or in related fields, such as business, criminal justice, mental health or government agencies. Many employers are interested in the skills that psychology majors bring to collecting, analyzing and interpreting data and their experience with individuals, behaviors, environments, and their interactions.
